Health Minister to open Asia Pacific Nursing Congress in Sydney

The Federal Minister for Health and Ageing, Tony Abbott, is to open the Asia Pacific Nursing Congress, which runs from 10-12 November in Sydney. The first Congress was held in Seoul, Korea in 1999. Its purpose is to establish professional nursing links between countries in the region.

The Congress will be discussing issues such as worldwide nursing shortages, migration and the ethical recruitment of nurses; the impact of infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS; trade agreements and their impact on nursing and health policy; and, nursing education models in the Asia Pacific context.

Key speakers include:

> James Buchan (UK) Leader in an International Council of Nurses project undertaking the first global investigation of the nursing workforce.
> Patricia Ranald (Australia) Policy Manager, Public Interest Advocacy Centre and Convenor, Australian Fair Trade and Investment Network of 90 community organisations.
> Luis Lobato (East Timor) President of the East Timor Nurses Association and East Timor Vice Minister for Health.
> Pelenatete Stowers (Samoa) Government Chief Nurse, Registrar, Board of Nursing.
