ANF announces scholarship to mark IND

The Australian Nursing Federation marked International Nurses Day (IND) 2006 by providing a new biennial scholarship for a nurse who is an ANF member to attend future International Council of Nurses (ICN) conferences.

The scholarship will allow an active ANF member, with an interest in the global issues facing nurses, to be part of a delegation attending next year’s ICN conference in Yokohama, Japan.

ANF Federal Secretary Jill Iliffe said Australian nurses are well regarded internationally for the expertise and insight they bring to the profession.

‘The scholarship will encourage more nurses in Australia to become directly involved in the important role of the ICN in establishing standards and policy for nursing internationally,’ Ms Iliffe said.

Full details on the scholarship and how to apply will be available in the near future and will be published on the ANF website and in the Australian Nursing Journal.

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every May 12, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth in 1820. This year’s theme for IND is Safe staffing saves lives.

The ANF is committed to campaigning to provide safe nursing care both nationally and internationally. Safe staffing levels are essential for the safe care of people needing nursing care and for the safety of nurses.
