International Nurses Day
Happy International Nurses Day, 12 May

The Australian Nursing Federation marks International Nurses Day by celebrating and supporting Australian nurses. International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every May 12, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth in 1820.

The Australian Nursing Federation will celebrate International Nurses Day (IND) 2007 by awarding a new biennial scholarship.

The scholarship recipient is Wendy Corkill, a senior intensive care nurse at Alice Springs Hospital and an ANF member. Wendy has worked in many areas of nursing including remote health and nursing management and has been a volunteer nurse in Viet Nam and Myanmar. Wendy will be awarded the new biennial scholarship to attend the International Council of Nurses (ICN) Conference in Yokohama Japan June 2007; at which the ANF Federal Secretary, Jill Iliffe will speak.

Ms Iliffe said, “Wendy represents the incredible contribution and commitment all nurses make to their profession, which is the reason Australians regard nursing as our most ‘ethical and honest’ profession.” Wendy is at the forefront of the Alice Springs Hospital Intensive Care Unit and is known as a staunch advocate for her patients and colleagues.

Ms Iliffe said she is pleased to have such a strong Australian representative at the ICN Conference, adding that Australian nurses are well regarded internationally for the expertise and insight they bring to the profession.
