The ANF supports Australia’s commitment to closing the appalling 17 year life expectancy gap that exists between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians through implementation of the HREOC* Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commissioner’s recommendations to achieve health equality for Indigenous people within a generation. Australia’s nurses also support the recommendations as outlined in the Little Children are Sacred Report.

Further commitment to the human rights and improved health of Indigenous Australians must come through greater consultation by government to Indigenous communities.
The ANF will work towards the commitments outlined in our Reconciliation Action Plan, and will continue to encourage the Australian government to increase the financial support for the nursing programs bringing positive long-term health strategies to Aboriginal communities.
