The Australian Nursing Federation was commissioned by the Australian Government to carry out a research study into the use of information technology by nurses in Australia. The research was conducted by a project team from the University of Southern Queensland. The objectives of the study were to:

  • identify the extent to which nurses have access to and use information technology and information management systems;
  • identify the purposes for which nurses use information technology and information management systems;
  • identify the readiness of nurses to participate in e-health initiatives such as HealthConnect (including MediConnect);
  • understand the barriers that prevent nurses from benefiting from information technology and Information management systems;
  • recommend ways to overcome these barriers and provide opportunities for nurses to better use information technology and information management systems within the Government policy framework; and
  • prepare a road map for access, education and training to meet the needs of nurses.
